What's waste management and recycling perspective ?

It could be a significant waste of money and an unnecessary additional cost for the public at a time when the cost of living is a great concern. We do support DRS for niche materials which don’t fit into normal kerbside capture and pose other threats and risks, like batteries for example. Scotland ploughing ahead on DRS alone is not ideal from our perspective. We would ask that any DRS proposals be parked until we have seen the real impact of EPR and consistent collections, perhaps over a three to five year period. Is there any need for the significant investment in ‘return capture points’ if nearly all of the target materials are being captured and to the quality required through kerbside reforms?

From a waste management and recycling perspective, our hope would be that increasing recycling rates of drinks containers will result in increased investment in domestic recycling capacity. We can’t have different packaging labelling north and south of the border. The differing rules are nonsensical and all UK governments need to work together to resolve this issue. The system should be designed to ensure that citizens can continue to use their home recycling bins to obtain their refund for containers. Given the prevalence of online shopping, the idea of predominantly relying on citizens using reverse vending machines seems archaic, rather than revolutionary. DRS should be more about impacting public behaviour and attitudes. Progress in Scotland has been slow and has left businesses confused due to a lack of thought and planning. We must ensure that higher recycling rates are justified regarding the overall carbon impact of vehicle emissions in any system.
